Some past activities

  • Asking questions of election candidates.
  • Taking part in the largest ever anti-war demonstration in London on 15 February 2003.
  • Joining subsequent anti-war demonstrations.
  • Picketing the offices of local MP Michael Foster; lobbying him on many occasions.
  • Organising a public meeting to debate the invasion of Iraq.
  • Demonstrating against the invasion of Iraq with die-ins, vigils, street theatre, and other public activities.
  • Maintaining a weekly stall in Hastings Town Centre drawing attention to the deaths and suffering in Iraq, and petitioning for a full judicial public inquiry into the reasons why Britain went to war.
  • Confronting General Dynamics, who have a factory in Hastings, about their role in the arms trade.
  • Organising a major one-day conference on the theme of "Waging War, Making Peace". Speakers included Milan Rai, Bruce Kent, Kate Hudson.
  • Organising a "Message to Bush" campaign.
  • Organising a "Weapons Search" in Hastings.
  • Making links with other groups including Campaign Against Arms Trade, CND, Stop the War Coalition, etc.
  • Creating artwork, information leaflets, and petitions.
  • Helping to raise money for the children of Iraq through UNICEF.
  • Organising three well attended multi-band benefit concerts to raise money and awareness.
  • Demonstrating at a Shell station to publicise big oil companies stealing Iraqi oil.
  • Taking part in International Women's Day 8th March 2008 celebrations with an anti-war stall.
  • Organising a gig on 9th March 2008 to raise money for Child Victims of War.

  • Running the Hastings half marathon with an anti-war message.
  • Attending the 50th anniversary of the Aldermaston anti-nuclear demonstration.
  • Holding a Campaign against the Arms Trade stall 7th June 2008. Hundreds of leaflets distributed and dozens of signatures collected for a petition demanding that BAE Systems are subject to British law instead of bribing their way into multibillion pound sales to countries like Saudi Arabia and Indonesia with impunity.
  • Showing the film "On the Verge" at a regular meeting thus publising the four year campaign by Brighton peace activists to close the local EDO bomb factory.
  • Attending the Shell AGM as single shareholders and asking hard hitting questions.
  • Conducting a vigil in Hastings Town Centre at the death of the 100th soldier in Afghanistan.

Hands off Iraqi Oil

Hastings activists were among those who marched in London on October 11th to highlight the threatened rip-off of Iraqi oil. The march, organised by Hands Off Iraqi Oil, started at Shell House before snaking its way to the US embassy via BP’s headquarters. At its head was a huge puppet of vice president Cheney trying to grasp an Iraqi oil well.

Gaza Vigil About 50 people showed up at the maximum, with another 50 joining in over the hour. £82 was collected for Medical Aid to Palestine, and another £18 collected at the meeting with the Brighton Tubas Group.

John Lynes

John was born into a Jewish family in the UK in 1928 and has been a Quaker for over 20 years. He worked as an engineer in lighting research, and also as a university lecturer in architecture. He first volunteered in Israel-Palestine as a Quaker Observer attached to the Christian Peacemaker Team (CPT) in 2002-3 and as an Ecumenical Accompanier in 2003. He then joined CPT full-time in 2004. John lives in Hastings when he is not in Hebron and can provide a first hand account of life under occupation. For more about John and the work of CPT see www.cpt.org
